Harishchandragad Camping

Khireshwar and Pachnai side, Ahmednagar district

If you are looking for a trek-cum-camping legend near Mumbai and Pune, Harishchandragad is a great choice. Trails from Khireshwar, Pachnai or Nalichi Vaat climb to a 1,424 m plateau where campers pitch near the Kedareshwar cave temple and its water-filled cave. The evening walk to Konkan Kada, a huge curved cliff facing the Konkan, is the reason most people come. Winter nights at the top are cold enough to make the campfire essential. Kalyan via Murbad is the usual rail route, with jeeps covering the last stretch to the base villages.

For the common Pachnai route, drive via Kalyan, Murbad and Alephata to Pachnai village; jeeps run from the ghat base. Kalyan is the nearest major railhead. The Khireshwar route starts near Malshej. From the base it is a 2-4 hour trek to the top.

This is a genuine trek, not a drive-up camp. Start the climb early, carry 2-3 litres of water, and skip Konkan Kada's edge in wind or rain. Winter nights at the top drop near single digits; the Nalichi Vaat route is only for experienced trekkers with gear.

Which route is easiest for Harishchandragad?

Pachnai is the gentlest, about 2-2.5 hours up. Khireshwar is scenic and moderate. Nalichi Vaat is technical and best left to experienced groups.

Where do people camp on Harishchandragad?

Most camp near the Kedareshwar cave temple and the caves around the plateau, then walk to Konkan Kada for sunset and sunrise.
