Raigad
Mahad taluka, Raigad district
If you are looking for the most important fort in Maratha history, Raigad is the one. This was the capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and the royal court complex, market street, granaries and the throne site are all still visible on the vast plateau at 853 metres. You can climb the steps in 2 to 3 hours or take the ropeway. It is about 70 km from Pune with Mangaon as the nearest station. Give it a full day, because there is a lot to take in.
