If you are looking for a remote forest fort above the Koyna backwaters, Vasota is a great choice. Also called Vyaghragad, it stands inside the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary in Satara district, and reaching it means a boat crossing plus about 4 hours of walking via Kusapur through dense forest. The ruined gate, roofless Hanuman temple, cisterns and the great U-shaped Babukada cliff wait at 1,162 metres. This is a permit-and-planning trek, wild from start to finish. October to February is the window.

  • U-shaped Babukada cliff
  • Dense Koyna sanctuary forest
  • Hanuman temple and water cisterns

Reach the Koyna backwaters and use the authorized boat-and-forest approach to Met Indavli/Kusapur, then follow the marked forest trail to Vasota; the source also describes a Nageshwar route.
