Mohandar (Shidaka) Fort

Mohandari, Satmala range, Nashik district

hard1.5-2 hours from MohandariNovember to March

If you are looking for a hard and little-known Satmala fort, Mohandar, also called Shidaka, is a great choice. The 1.5 to 2 hour climb from Mohandari in Nashik district ends at a summit marked by a dramatic eroded needle-eye opening in the rock. Ruined walls, a bastion and many old tanks wait on top, and the views sweep across the Satmala forts. Note that several tanks are dry or unsafe, so carry your own water. Nashik Road is the railhead, and November to March is the window.

  • Natural needle-eye rock opening
  • Views across the Satmala forts
  • Ruined bastion, walls and cisterns

From Vani reach Nanduri on the Nashik-Saputara road, take the Abhona road and turn after about 3.5 km to Mohandari village; use the safer eastern cleft route unless equipped for the technical needle-eye line.

The needle-eye line has a 15-foot climbing patch and needs proper gear and skill; the alternative western line has scree and thorns. Most tank water is unsafe. Use an experienced guide and prefer the eastern cleft route.

Is Mohandar also called Shidaka?

Yes. Mohandar is also called Shidka or Shidaka Fort.

Can beginners cross the needle eye?

Not without technical guidance. The passage requires climbing equipment and at least a 40-foot rope.

Which route is safer?

The eastern cleft route avoids the technical needle-eye crossing and takes about 1.5 hours.
