Sindhudurg Fort
Malvan, Sindhudurg
If you are looking for the great sea fort of the Konkan, Sindhudurg off Malvan is unmissable. Shivaji Maharaj built it from 1664 on Kurte Island to control the coast, and a 15 to 20 minute boat ride drops you at its concealed Gomukhi entrance. The four-kilometre sea wall with 26 bastions is fully walkable, and inside you will find temples, wells and the impressions of Shivaji Maharaj's hand and footprints. Allow several hours to explore. Kudal is the railhead, and October to May is the season.
